The Well

The Well is the domain of the guild of the Cagers, and later home to your character and your friends.

History

The Well was the last of the guilds to be founded. Although the Night-Mother generally refuses to answer your questions about the Well directly, she speaks of someone named Mercy suggesting the foundation of the Well "before the Cognizance."

The name "Well" and the machinery you see in the tunnels suggest that the Well was originally some sort of waterworks. At one point, you find old blueprints detailing the nature of the Well, but you do not understand them entirely.

Modern Day

The Cagers are led by the Night Mother. They serve as wardens for the criminals, madmen, and general undesirables of the City. They also seem to have some legal authority in the City in general, having authorization to seize the property of those imprisoned.

Although it is not uncommon for guilds to apprentice people outside of their community, the Cagers are viewed with suspicion due to their practice of recruiting from the ranks of prisoners. This suspicion seems well-founded, as the Night-Mother has been quietly recruiting people with a grudge against the guilds (and in particular the Caretakers) as a way of building up an army.
