The City[]

The City is the overarching setting of the Eternal City series.

History[]

The City was founded by powerful guilds, each of which have control of a different industry. The last guild to be founded was the Cagers, who keep all of the city's prisoners and undesirables.

Other details of the City's history are shrouded in mystery and myth. The Night-Mother speaks of something called "the Cognizance," and someone called Mercy speaking of justice in the City, presumably describing the establishment of the Cagers guild.

Modern Day[]

Government[]

The guilds maintain strict control of the City, and most guildless live in poverty. The Night-Mother (the current leader of the Cagers), believes this is a doomed system, and has been building an army of those with a grudge against the guilds (And especially the Caretakers) to rebel against the guilds and reclaim the city. Current guilds include the Caretakers, the Cagers, the Locksmen, and the Lanternmen.

Culture[]

The residents of the City celebrate a holiday known as the Brightgift Festival, which Page asks Cinder about after the latter's arrival.

Related Locations[]

The Garden[]

The Garden grows produce for the entire City and is the childhood home of your character.

The Glimmerward[]

The Glimmerward is a wealthy district, home to many of the city's richest. It is said to be a place of "bath houses and finery."

Broken Hill[]

Broken Hill is the home of the Locksmen. It lies "on the border between the City's great districts," presumably the Glimmerward and the Squats. It is said to be the home of "strange rituals," one of which your character can witness in a branch choice.

The Squats[]

The Squats are the slums of the City, and is "where the City's most destitute build hovels." Your character and your friends live there after escaping the Garden but before being recruited by the Cagers. Page and Cinder were born in the Squats, and you can visit Cinder's parents and Page's old home.

The Well[]

The Well is the home of the Cagers. It was previously some sort of waterworks, which likely gave it its name. The lower part of the Well (where the prisoners are kept) is known as the Catacombs. You, Violet, Mudboy, and potentially Page live there once you join the Cagers.

Tunnels[]

Under the city is a complex network of tunnels. It seems to be a home for beings similar the Entity, and tends not to follow rules of physical space. Exploring the tunnels, you often hear strange voices, see things, find yourself pursued, or experience other distortions of reality (such as entering a cavern and then realizing it has no entrances or exits).

Meremarket[]

Meremarket is a district of the City discussed by the Caretakers if you choose to eavesdrop on them.

The Glower[]

The Glower is a district of the City discussed by the Caretakers if you choose to eavesdrop on them.
